Episode the 25th: Food talk with Nate Box

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On May - 31 - 2010

Until very recently — perhaps as recently as five or seven years ago — Edmonton suffered a dearth of great cafés and restaurants. Oh sure, there were diamonds in the rough, but the rough was expansive and the diamonds as rare as something even more rare than diamonds.

Then, the landscape started changing, as Edmonton’s downtown began its still-ongoing revitalization. Now, the city is blessed with great eating and drinking establishments. That means the time is ripe for Nate Box to open the Elm Café.

Well over one year in the making, Nate had originally wanted to open the café as a restaurant concept in the Belgravia neighbourhood on Edmonton’s southside. But the lease fell through and so it was back to the drawing board. Last March, though, things started coming together for Nate, when he locked down a location in Oliver — the west part of Edmonton’s downtown (outside of the core).

With the Elm Café slated to open on Monday, June 7 (bright and early at 7am), Scott and I decided to sit down with Nate and find out exactly what it takes to open a café in the this town. We also talk hamburger waterslides, and some of the worst food trends sweeping the city.

Game Review Corner: Fury of Dracula

Posted by Scott C. Bourgeois On May - 29 - 2010

Adam and I have been discussing new things to do for the website and the show. On one such brainstorming session, the following conversation occurred.

ADAM: Scott, you magnificent bastard. You have a whole room full of board games.

SCOTT: Yes. Yes, I do.

ADAM: You should review all of them.

SCOTT: That’s insane. I have way, way too many of them. It would take years.

ADAM: Do it anyway!

So here we are. Welcome to Scott’s Game Review Corner. And our first subject of review is the remake of the 1987 board game “The Fury of Dracula”, now called “Fury of Dracula.” Read the rest of this entry »

[FML Friday]: ZOMG spiders!

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On May - 28 - 2010

It’s another rainy Friday here is the City of Champions. And though the weather might have you down, your emotional salvation lies in taking easy digs at the chumps lousy enough to post their absurd woes at FMyLife.com.

I mean, you think you have it bad? You’ve got nothing on the guy whose dog shat on him, or the woman who was crushed by a television set… Actually, both of those people totally deserved it (as I’m certain you’ll agree). The dude who didn’t deserve what he got, though, was the man who wound up with a face full of spiders.

I know, right? Just read on for the gory details. Read the rest of this entry »

The terrible twos: celebrating a local media gem

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On May - 26 - 2010

It’s not everyday someone turns two. You might even say it only happens once in a lifetime. And while most douchebag children get a chance to experience this milestone, it’s nothing but hard work, perseverance, sticktoitiveness, and other ridiculous made-up phrases and portmanteaux that allow a hyperlocal podcast to mark the occasion.

Our colleagues from the League of Extraordinary Media — videogame podcast UserCreatedContent — are celebrating their birthday this Saturday, May 29, starting at 6pm at Hi-Tech Gaming. Read the rest of this entry »

Politics in Edmonton just got more interesting

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On May - 25 - 2010

While Edmonton’s municipal election is just over four months away, and the nomination deadlines for candidates is equally distant (think Sept 20 for the nom deadline, and Oct 20 18 for the election itself), that hasn’t stopped a group of young upstarts from creating the alternative media homebase of Edmonton’s 2010 Municipal Election.
