A Bonar for Edmonton

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On October - 25 - 2010

When I first heard the name “Bonar” uttered in reference to Edmonton’s 2010 Municipal Election, the nine-year-old and me giggled. But after a few weeks of campaigning, it became clear that Daryl Bonar — the third-place, come-from-behind, who-the-fuck-is-this-guy? mayoral candidate who won over many voters — was a force to be reckoned with.

In a great article on the Edmonton Journal.com, writer Richard Warnica tells Bonar’s story, as Bonar himself works to decide where his political life will go next Read the rest of this entry »

We have two Hallow-winners!

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On October - 18 - 2010

Last week, we ran a contest. A contest with prizes.

Those prizes were movie passes to the new Ultra AVX setup at local Cineplex theatres. What’s Ultra AVX, you ask? Only the awesomest movie setup on the planet.

We had many great entries to our scary-movie-haiku contest. And it was a tough choice. Scott and I battled with giant jousting paddles (each representing one of our entrants) a la American Gladiators. Then, after some bloodied noses, we decided at sit down and actually read the haikus people submitted. Read the rest of this entry »

No Respect

Posted by Scott C. Bourgeois On October - 15 - 2010

It’s been a busy week! And let’s be frank, it’s because the election is drawing near, and just like with Christmas or Halloween, there’s plenty to do.

There’s a part of me that loves election time. The drama, the debate, the politics – it’s exciting to watch. The thing is, there’s also a part of me that loathes it… for pretty much the exact same reasons.

The reason for this is fairly simple: I hate the lack of respect in politics.

I’m not going to go on a “good-old-days” rant here, because I’m confident that this isn’t necessarily a new development. But it is constantly dismaying to watch, and it makes me tired, depressed and more than a little cynical about the whole political process.

Movie haikus = win!

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On October - 14 - 2010

In case you haven’t heard, a new kind of movie technology has hit Edmonton’s silver screens. And they call it…

ULTRA AVX

Last week, I received an email from Shannon Hunter, an account coordinator with Cloud AdAgents, a group representing Cineplex. Seems the movie-house company implemented a new kind of movie-watching technology (which Allie’s posted about on her blog) and they want to get the word out using social media peeps like us. ‘Electioneering’ in Edmonton

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On October - 12 - 2010

I considered writing a post about the ongoing weirdness surrounding Edmonton’s municipal election, at least the way it’s playing out online. From hastily-created and just-as-quickly-abandoned Twitter accounts, to phantom journalists from Seattle, to the destruction of election signs by fire (OK, that didn’t happen online), I think it might be safe to say Election 2010 is nothing short of bizarre.

But I’m not going to talk about that. I write this brief blog post to call to your attention some of the outstanding creativity that has come out of Election 2010. We can allow the weirdos to continue to conduct themselves strangely in some obscure corner of Twitter. Read the rest of this entry »
