Auction: dinner with the Unknown Studio

Share us!

Do you like contests? So do I. So we’re doing one. But I need you to indulge me before we get to that. Allow me to spin some narrative action for you…

I’ve had a pretty good prize run of late. I won a prize at our company Christmas party, I won tickets to the 98th Grey Cup, I’ve won several books as door prizes over the last weeks… It seems a golden horseshoe is lodged firmly between my butt cheeks. You’d think I’d have noticed it by now.

And my streak continued this week unabated.

On Friday, I entered this little contest being run by the brand-spankin’ new Oodle Noodle that opened downtown on Jasper Ave between 108 and 109 St. It was a Twitter-based contest to win dinner for four at the new location. Since the amount of effort required to enter was so minimal, and since I’m on Twitter all day long anyhow, I entered.

I entered… and I won.

At this point, my winning ways have me terrified. The notion of Karmic balance clearly states that because of all this good shit that’s been happening, there’s a high probability (I can hear all the math and stats geeks squirming that I would deign to use such a word) I’ll be hit by a bus this week.

In order to avoid that personal calamity, we’re doing a good, old-fashioned contest to auction off Dinner with The Unknown Studio at Oodle Noodle Downtown. I wanted to make sure this was OK with Sam, the manager of Oodle Noodle Downtown. When I told him my story, he was excited.

“Auctioning a dinner off for charity is a hilarious idea,” he told me. “I will match any of the money you raise, and donate it to the Youth Emergency Shelter Society.”

See, kids? This is why we all need to BUY LOCAL.

So here’s the deal…

Starting right now until 11:59pm on Friday, December 10, I want to see your bids in the comments. You’re bidding on dinner with Scott and I — date and time to be specified per the winner’s schedule. The highest bid wins. So be sure to check back often to make sure you aren’t being outbid. And if you are, throw down some more cash.

The dinner includes four entrees, an order of spring or salad rolls, and four drinks. A damn fine deal.

The money we raise will go to the Edmonton Food Bank, and the matched portion that Sam and Oodle Noodle kick in will go to YESS.

It’s Christmas, lots of people are hungry or need a roof over their heads. Here’s a way you can help AND experience an outstanding meal with two upstanding dudes.

Let the games… BEGIN.

I’ll start at $40. And I’ll throw in a lecture on the independence of events — the fact that winning a lot lately does not make you “due” for calamity. That should make for an exciting evening, don’t you think?

    Is there a starting bid?

I’ll start things off at $30.

Chris beat me to it. I’ll raise my bid to $45. Do I get to pick the dinner topic?

$75. Hopefully you’re not hit by that bus (which according to my calculations is almost a virtual certainty) before the dinner.

How about $60. Can we livestream this dinner?

Probably! I was thinking of recording the whole event with our fancy new portable studio!

    Hey all!

I had to tweak the comment settings on this so nothing gets held for moderation. Sorry about any confusion Michael Senchuk is currently the front-runner in bids with $75.

$80 and the dinner topic will be the rise and fall of the Hapsburg Monarchy.

Alas, municipal civil servant does not pay enough to afford oodle noodle at the going rate. Even if it is with such winsome company (plus I was going to suggest scheduling it around the grand reopening of the Dawson bridge.)

Oh man! That would have been epic…

When’s that happening, anyway? Is it just “later in December” with no firm date?

Your guess is as good as mine. Haven’t heard anything. Hopefully soon.

Jeez. Raffaella just blew me out of the water.

May the highest bidder savour their Oodle Noodle.

        Good luck.

Dave, if you bid higher than me it’s almost like you’re bidding that amount plus $300. I intend to honour my bid even if I don’t win.

Also, I’ve been waiting for Oodle Noodle to set up a downtown location for years. A donation in their name is the littlest I can do to show my appreciation for that.

Well, congrats to you Raffaella! You’ve won dinner with Scott, myself and a guest of your choosing.

And because you’ve been so generous, I’m going to kick in an additional $100 personal donation myself.

Huzzah! Suffice to say, we didn’t expect the bidding to get this high, and are very thankful to you.

In exchange, we promise to make dinner an intellectually stimulating event.

Enjoy the Oodle Noodle, Raffaella! As you said, tis the season, so in that spirit I will match your donation to the Food Bank.

    Thank you, Unknown Studio.
