Beers, zombies and prizes!

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On January - 28 - 2011

You’re probably sitting there right now, wondering just what on earth you’re going to do with yourself this Sunday night. Because gods know there’s no football this weekend. You have to wait for that Superbowl you so desperately want to watch.

In the meantime, the thing that should be on your mind is that sweet, subtle sound of feet dragging across littered concrete as the shambling undead make their way across the urban landscape directly into our hearts.

What the hell am I talking about, you ask?

You guessed it, friends: it’s time for another YegZomBeer event! Read the rest of this entry »

Wherein Scott spoils the 83rd Academy Awards

Posted by Scott C. Bourgeois On January - 27 - 2011

Friends, it’s time again for that most wonderful time of year I like to call “Oscar Season.” It’s a lot like “Rabbit Season” and “Duck Season”, except with more glitz, less bird-shot to the face, and tons of forced happiness.

And with this week’s announcement of the nominees, it’s also time for my yearly tradition of giving you my knee-jerk Oscar picks – which are guaranteed to be totally accurate.*

Let’s begin shall we? Read the rest of this entry »

Wining for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

Posted by Scott C. Bourgeois On January - 25 - 2011

I consider myself to be a “social drinker.” I don’t go out to get drunk, and I rarely have any sort of alcoholic beverages by myself, but I enjoy them with company. Beer, scotch, girly-drinks: there’s always something for me to enjoy.

But I’ll admit I’ve never been very knowledgeable about wine. Oh, I like wine – but it’s not my go-to alcohol, and I can’t say I really know much difference between a pinot-noir and a chardonnay. I know that some wine is red, and some is white. And I prefer the white one.

So when Adam and I were invited to a sneak-preview of the Flavours of BC’s Naramata Bench Wine Tasting & Auction, I was quite thrilled! It was a great opportunity to get to know a little more about a beverage I really don’t know too much about. Read the rest of this entry »

Crowdsourcing for creative

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On January - 23 - 2011

Some of our readers will know that I work for an advertising agency here in Edmonton. It’s called Calder Bateman. We work with a wide variety of clients from retail, to hospitality, to not-for-profit, to government.

I’m posting off-topic today because of a new campaign we’re working on.

Most recently, we’ve undertaken a campaign for seatbelt safety for the whole province of Alberta. Currently, 93% of Albertans use their seatbelts. But there’s still an alarming 7% who don’t. Our goal is reach this 7% and change their minds about seatbelt safety.

But we’re trying to do this a little differently. Read the rest of this entry »

Arizona Wines from Maynard

Arizona Stronghold and Caduceus wines featuring Arizona fruit made popular by Maynard

Madonna, Dan Akroyd, Wayne Gretzky and James Maynard Keenan: what do these celebrities have in common? No, they haven’t all dated Paris Hilton. They all own their own wineries and in some cases vineyards.

James Maynard Keenan, more commonly referred to as Maynard, is best known as the ultra secretive, artsy and quirky  front man of the band TOOL. TOOL is a band that tends to be defined in many different ways because their musical styling can change from album to album but I hope we can all agree that TOOL is a rock band if we can’t all call it a metal band.

Maynard is one of the last celebrities I would have expected to move into the world of wine. Yes it is likely because I picture him shirtless with a mohawk, or with long greasy hair, or even just plain old sweaty and disheveled after performing a concert. I think it also doesn’t help that that’s also what most of the other people around me look like when I’m at a TOOL concert.  Read the rest of this entry »
