Election time! | S02E21

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On April - 20 - 2011

In our 21st episode this season, Scott and I speak with Laura Collison, producer of CJSR’s Adamant Eve, and Duncan Wojtaszek, political man-about-town. We talk about the forthcoming federal election. Is it an election Canadians want? Is it THE social media election? Are we going to wind up with another minority government? All of these questions are answered in this great episode… or if not answered, at least speculated upon.

We also speak with the organizers of the Edmonton Music Collectors’ Show (@confessionality is one of them!) and with Kris Krol about the ONE Shot Photo Contest being promoted by Art Jam.

Here’s the show breakdown…

0:00: Intro “Megatron for Prime Minister!”
1:00: The Social Media Election… NOT.
19:30: Almost live at the Edmonton Music Collectors’ Show
28:22: Party leaders and their eventual demise
48:11: Adam shapes up – update #2
52:37: The ONEShot Photo Contest, by Art Jam
1:00:47: Network Consortia and Leadership Debates
1:13:30: An Election Fast 16

The Unknown Studio @ Grant MacEwan University | S02E20.5

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On April - 18 - 2011

Last week, Scott and I were invited back to Grant MacEwan University by Archie McLean, chair of the school’s journalism program (we did an episode with one of Archie’s classes last year). Scott and I were eager to meet with a second-year class and chat with them about their class project and one of Edmonton’s newest hyperlocal blogs WestEdmontonLocal.ca.

We decided to turn that discussion into a special episode that we hope you enjoy. Thanks again to Archie and his class for hosting us.

My life: the story so far

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On April - 18 - 2011

Please allow me a little self-indulgence. I’m feeling a little sentimental today…

I’ve been blessed with unusual success in my life. Some of it has to do with luck. Some of it is because my parents (and let’s face it, my brothers too) knew when to crack the whip, and when to let me screw up. Some of it is because I’ve had outstanding mentors to guide me.

But most of it is because I’ve worked my butt off to create things, and ensure their longevity. I don’t believe good things come to those who wait. Good things come to those who work, and that means sacrifice, long nights, and occasionally tears.

If you’re sitting on your ass waiting for success to find you, you’re being lazy. You go out and you find success.

In some ways, I’ve made this success look easy — almost like I fell ass-backwards into it. But that’s not even close to true.

Urban planning champions | S02E20

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On April - 7 - 2011

We’re well into the last half of our second season, and our twentieth episode has lots of hot juicy Edmonton goodness we’d like to cram directly into your ear holes.

Scott and I invited Michael Otto and Scott Lilwall — authors of a fantastic urban planning blog called The Charrette — onto the show to talk about the growth of this great urban centre some of us call home.

We also have a Sex Talk segment that includes toy reviews, just in time for Easter; we were live at the launch of the Edmonton Champions Project; and we even bring you information on exciting changes at Guru Digital Arts College.

Here’s the show breakdown…

0:00: Intro “WTF?”
2:00: They call him Lilwall. And they call HIM Motto.
17:01: Sex Talk — Easter Eggs and Bunnies
19:54: That arena sure is a sticky wicket.
43:35: The Edmonton Champions Project Launch.
59:43: GalaGuru 3: A celebration of great success.
1:13:31: SimCity 3000.
1:28:09: The Fast 16 with the Charrette boys.

Definitely Not a Stairway to Heaven

Posted by Lisa McRitchie On April - 5 - 2011

The Calgary Tower and it's 802 stairs

The annual Alberta Wilderness Association’s Climb and Run for Wilderness is back for another year. What this is is an opportunity for you to climb each and every stair of the Calgary Tower as well as raise funds and awareness for the Alberta Wilderness Association.

You have the opportunity to climb as a team and compete against other teams for best team spirit or most climbs, as an individual and again compete for the most climbs or you can even sign up for the race. With the race you run 1km then up the 802 stairs.

No matter what you do, if you select the multiple climb registration, you get to climb the stairs as many times as you would like over the course of the day, 8:30am until 1:30pm. Once you get to the top of the stairs you get the opportunity to see the view from the top of the tower, then take the elevator down. The elevator can really help with your knees.

Participants range from young children to senior citizens, and there are a number of quite elderly participants every year. They take their time up the stairwell, then take a break before going again. Yes, they climb up all of those stairs, multiple times, and voluntarily.

Yes, people willingly sign up to do this, and it can be a lot of fun. There are bands that will perform at the base of the tower for those who are cheering, taking time out to catch their breath or are making their way back up. Often you will find rescue animals so you may be able to see exactly why the funds are being raised.

If you are up for a challenge, and in the Calgary area on April 16th, why not give this challenge a try. If nothing else, it’s great bragging rights.

Happy sweating!
