Mass Effect 2 has stolen my life

Posted by scottybomb On January - 27 - 2010Comments Off

Alright, I admit I haven’t blogged much lately. Fact is, I was very, very busy last week and didn’t get the chance to write anything.

But, I intended to get things in order this week, and actually have two articles on the go – the intention having been to get them online this week and begin contributing again.

Then Mass Effect 2 came out.

Suffice to say, Mass Effect 2 is an amazing game, and one that I may actually write a proper review of at some point in the very near future. But I can’t right now. Because right now, it owns me.

So bear with me, gentle reader. I will be back soon, in all my splendour, and richer for the experience. But until that day – likely sometime this weekend – I ask that you shed no tears for me. The sacrifices I make, are for you.

To the Terminus Systems, Joker, full speed!

In all seriousness, I’ll get back to blogging shortly, and Mass Effect 2 is my excuse.

I don’t have an excuse for why Adam’s been so quiet. Usually he’s quite the attention whore.

Episode the Sixteenth: Foreign Journalism

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On January - 25 - 2010Comments Off

In keeping with our seemingly recent theme of covering different aspects of the journalistic profession, Scott and I played host to iNews880.com news reporter Jeremy Lye. Jeremy, originally from Australia, spent some of his professional life covering corruption and drugs wars taking place in Central America, particularly places like Honduras and Guatemala. We wanted to know Jeremy’s perspective on what it’s like to work in foreign places, where you might not know the language and customs so well.

Jeremy shared some of his scary moments with us, and some of his thoughts on why he would place himself in those situations, and now his perception of traveling to dangerous places has changed now that he’s a dad (though he definitely gave us the impression that once his kids grow up, he’s right back on the foreign journalism train). Then we also talk about how Australians don’t drink Fosters, and how awesome the snow is here (seriously, Jeremy loves the snow).

Give the episode a listen, and share your thoughts in the comments section or give us a review on the iTunes music store!

EDMONTON JOURNAL SPONSORS THE UNKNOWN STUDIO
===============================================

It’s true! After so much joking and tongue-in-cheek referrals to Edmonton’s newspaper of record on our show, the Edmonton Journal decided to put their money where our mouths are, by sponsoring the Unknown Studio for the month of February.

We’re helping EJ to promote their recently released Blackberry mobile launcher. You can check it out by clicking here on your Blackberry browser. If you have any comments about the mobile launcher or the Journal’s mobile site, let us know and we’ll pass it along!

You can take the chef out of the kitchen…

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On January - 23 - 20101 COMMENT

You probably don’t know this about me, but I love baking. I used to do it a lot when I was living at my parents’ place. Took an interest in it in junior high school, actually. And back then, I felt like such a knob asking my mum if she could show me how to bake.

“You just follow the recipe,” she said, likely looking at me like I’d just asked the dumbest question on earth.

“But what the hell is Demerara sugar?” I probably asked.

“It’s just sugar!”

In spite of my stupidity, my desire to eat cookies and other sweet confections would force my mother into the kitchen to watch over me and ensure I knew what I was doing. Eventually, we established a pattern, once I was able to bake on my own without completely screwing up: I would bake, and she would follow me around the kitchen cleaning up after me. I was in her domain, and she needed things to be just so. My mum’s still like this. She kicks up a fuss at Christmas about having to do all this cooking, but when you offer to help her, she basically tells you to fuck off and stay out of her kitchen. Read the rest of this entry »

Thank the gods it’s FML Friday

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On January - 22 - 20103 COMMENTS

Wow, what a week, everyone, am I right? So many things to do, and in that last sentence so many over-used commas. But we made it. And isn’t that what really matters?

So your reward for making in through this fabulous week is another installment of our traditional FML Friday. In this soon-to-be crowd-favourite (soon!), we pick a few posts from the site Fmylife.com and answer them like they’re advice column questions. Because let’s face it: if you’re posting your story to Fmylife, you need advice. Or just a smack upside the head. Read the rest of this entry »

Doing our part…

Posted by Adam Rozenhart On January - 20 - 2010Comments Off

Scott and I try and make a conscious effort to be pillars of the community. Sometimes that means producing a show with a lot of beeped out expletives, sometimes it means posting content to our website that we hope our readers find humorous…

And sometimes it means helping out organizations in Edmonton. When the Christmas Bureau invited us to their media launch back in November, we were surprised. We didn’t think we’d made that much of a splash in Edmonton. Looking at our analytics and show download info, however, tells us that we’re doing something. Something good. FML Friday – whole lotta effin’ going on

Posted by scottybomb On January - 15 - 2010Comments Off

It’s time once again for FML Friday, wherein Adam or I take three recent entries from FML and give them the sound advice they need to stop complaining and get back on track.

Basically it’s an advice column. A very sarcastic, angry advice column. Read the rest of this entry »

Where \"me\" means \"us,\" really. This is the home of the Unknown Studio, a podcast based in Edmonton, AB. When we aren\'t casting pods, as it were, we\'re here posting content you\'ll no doubt find riveting and probably mostly apocryphal. But certainly worthy of comment.
